MTN’s Free Twitter service is coming to an end tonight
Make sure you have data on your account this evening, because MTN’s free Twitter service is coming to an abrupt end at midnight tonight.
“It’s been over four years. #FreeTwitter will be laid to rest on Tuesday midnight, 25 September,” the company tweeted on Saturday, suggesting that its Free Twitter service was becoming unfeasible.
“Its last wishes were for you to make the most of it this weekend. May its soul live forever in your memes and GIFs.”

Three days later though, the sting for users hasn’t abated.
The above tweet, which received more than 5500 replies and 6700 retweets, has its fair share of acid from angry users.
An informal poll, which received more than 34000 responses, suggests that a vast majority of users are set to ditch MTN in favour of another network.
So which networking are we collectively switching/porting to, people??

MTN tried its best to quell the anger, but users kept upping the sass.
Been with mtn since 2001, it’s not easy letting go. But every abusive relationship has to end

Enjoying MTN’s suffering, other networks tried to hijack the Twitter thread. Vodacom paraded its Social Tickets system, but users were having none of it.
Some just want free Twitter.
no free Twitter but we do have attractive Social Tickets which includes, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. For more info: https://t.co/rnj7SVcMG0

It’s unclear how many users in South Africa take advantage of MTN’s Free Twitter service, but don’t be too surprised if South African Twitter is a bit more quiet and dull than usual on Wednesday.
