Vodacom, Mastercard launches VodaPay Masterpass digital payments app
South African telecoms giant Vodacom and global payments firm Mastercard on Thursday announced a new secure digital wallet and payments app called VodaPay Masterpass.
Available specifically for Vodacom users, the app lets customers “load any bank card into a secure digital wallet” effectively turning their device into a digital payments portal.
“Once loaded, these cards and the secure credentials associated with them are safely stored, enabling the customer to start transacting immediately without the hassle of entering these details each time they make a purchase,” the companies explained in a release.
Users can then purchase airtime, data, or other bundles from the app itself. Bills from DStv, traffic fines, or utilty bills can also be settled through the app.
VodaPay Masterpass also lets customers scan a QR code to pay for items where Masterpass is accepted, this includes QR codes from Zapper and Snapscan merchants.
“Once a QR code is scanned, the user selects the card they wish to use, and enters their bank PIN number on their own device to complete the transaction,” the companies clarified.
Customers using the app will not be billed for transactions.
The VodaPay app joins a number of other Masterpass apps designed for other South Africa firms, including banks Standard Bank and Absa.
VodaPay Masterpass is available on the Google Play Store for Android devices, and Apple’s App Store for iOS.
