Take that, Xbox: Sony’s PS3 is now the best selling console in the US
It had to happen, eventually. After two and a half years as the US’ best selling console, the Xbox 360 has now been knocked off the number one position by Sony’s PS3 according to NDP statistics. The reason? GTA V, said Geekwire.
Matter of fact, this is why GTA V made the PS3 sell like proverbial hotcakes:
Only R2700 (US$269) for a PS3 and the best game of 2013. Just take our money, please. Need more evidence? For that, we go to VGChartz.
“PS3 was the top selling console this month, breaking the 32-month streak of the Xbox 360 leading console hardware sales from January 2011 to August 2013, demonstrating how Grand Theft Auto V can shake things up in hardware as well as software.” said the NDP.
GTA V is the US’ most popular game — who is nipping at its heels though? Below are the top 10 most sold games in the US.
Grand Theft Auto V
Madden NFL 25
NBA 2K14
Diablo III
FIFA 14
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix
Disney Infinity
NHL 14
Minecraft
Saints Row IV
The PS3’s success even sparked off a comment from Major Nelson himself, who replied to a gaming journalists enthusiastic tweet.
@geoffkeighley Congrats to them – They indeed had a good month.

You can taste the bitterness in his words. But not in the sales figures. NDP stats for September 2013 in the US tells us that by the end of 2013, the industry would have made US$1.079-billion, a 27% increase from 2012. All portable hardware and software sales (3DS, PS Vita, iPod Touch and so on) has climbed 52% to US$745-million. Analysts and anyone with half a brain knows that in a few years time, portable would have utterly dominated the gaming market. Ain’t no one got time for sitting down in front of their TV any more.
