Square Enix announces Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 release date, shows off new trailer

The third compilation in the Kingdom Hearts series is finally getting a (rough) release date. Titled Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, the game will be available worldwide in December this year.

The Square Enix (SE) and Disney mashup series is finally making its debut on the PlayStation 4. The collection will contain an HD remaster of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (originally released on the Nintendo 3DS), cinematic tie-in Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover, and finally the all-new title Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep–A Fragmentary Passage. Both of the latter titles will tie into Kingdom Hearts III, though SE has yet to release full details on them.

Regardless of the name, this is the third title in the Kingdom Hearts HD series with the first two debuting on the PlayStation 3.

Released in 2013, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix included remastered versions of Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Re:Chain of Memories, as well as a theatre mode comprising of cutscenes from Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.

The second compilation, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix, included high definition versions of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix, and another theatre mode just for Kingdom Hearts Re:coded.

Sorry Xbox One fans, but Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 will only be available on PlayStation 4.
