Is the iPhone 7 Plus camera any good? Photographer gives breakdown

Apple iPhone 7 Plus,iphone

The iPhone 7 Plus sees Apple follow rival manufacturers with a dual camera setup, offering a traditional 12MP shooter and a 12MP telephoto camera. But does the phone deliver in the camera department as a result?

Well, photographer Austin Mann took the smartphone to Rwanda and put the device to work. What did he think of it?

For starters, Mann said alternating between the two cameras was “a blast” and changed the way he takes photos with the iPhone.

The 2x zoom on the iPhone 7 Plus works in every mode

“It works exactly as I hoped. It is super quick to switch between lenses, even while you are rolling video. As seen in the video above, jumping from 1x to 2x while recording can be a great way to punch in and emphasise a detail,” Mann wrote, adding that 2x zoom was just as sharp as the normal camera.

“However, I do not recommend the digital zoom beyond 2x. The quality of digital zoom degrades quickly and I find it unusable for photography (although it’s actually kind of nice as an animal spotting tool).”

The photographer was also impressed with the fact that 2x zoom worked with every mode, including video, timelapses, panoramas and slow-motion video.

Bigger file sizes, wider aperture and more

As for more traditional photography, Mann said the new f/1.8 cameras made for better low-light performance and the better ability to freeze motion.

The photographer praised the wider colour gamut being captured, saying colours in nature and skin really stood out.

“As pro photographers, we’re always looking for bigger file sizes, because bigger files mean higher quality images. My sources tell me file sizes are slightly larger with Wide Colour Gamut as the camera is actually capturing more colour data. Woohoo!”
