Huawei overthrows Apple as second most popular smartphone maker

Huawei is now the second-most popular smartphone manufacturer after it shipped 54.2-million smartphones worldwide in Q2 2018.

As a result, Apple is relegated to third place after shipping 41.3-million units.

“Huawei is shifting to more value-added models, by launching new flagship smartphones with the latest features,” IHS Markit noted in a report.

“Increasing brand recognition in Europe and Asia is enabling the company to challenge Samsung in many price segments.”

Samsung remained the world’s biggest smartphone maker in Q2 2018, despite its device shipments falling to 70.8-million units.

As for other manufacturers, Motorola was placed eighth with 10-million units shipped, growing by 41.5%, while LG saw a significant quarterly decline, shipping 11.2-million units, a fall of 15.5%.

Chinese firms Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo took fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively.
