Hyundai, Bisimoto partner again to build monster 700-horsepower Sonata
It seems like every year Hyundai eagerly awaits the SEMA auto show in Las Vegas to unleash its creative and petrol-fueled muscle, after a year of producing sensible cars. Last year, we saw a 1000-horsepower Genesis. This year we’ll be treated to a 708-horsepower Sonata. Yes, that sensible family saloon.
The SEMA Show, or the “Specialty Equipment Market Association” to be pedantic, is like car Christmas, showcasing the best of automotive performance parts and ludicrous design decisions from the world of customisers. And Hyundai has a little surprise of its own this edition.
Partnering with powertrain specialists Bisimoto, the Sonata’s 2.4-litre four-cylinder motor has been completely re-engineered, overhauling the pistons, conrods, and gains higher-revving valve-train and stronger camshafts. But most importantly, it also grows an enormous turbocharger and fuel management system pushing the power delivery well beyond what’s normally imaginable, or sensible.
Hilariously, there’s still room for a three-person family travelling at astronomical speed in both a straight line and around corners.
Although this may seem ridiculous and impossible — it wholly is. Last year the Korean manufacturer, partnering with Bisimoto once again, developed a 1000-horsepower Genesis that ate Paganis and McLarens for breakfast.
