Peugeot officially lifts the lid on the new 308 GTi

Fans of slightly off-kilter French hot hatches rejoice! The new Peugeot 308 GTi is here.

The new-look Pug comes with a 1.6l engine in two variants: 184 kW (250 hp) and 200 kW (270 hp). According to the French motoring giant, when combined with a power-to-weight ratio of 4.46 kg per unit of horsepower, the latter will go from 0-100 kph in a 6.0 seconds, covering 1 000 metres from a standing start in 25.3 seconds.

The 250 hp version isn’t much slower, going from 0 to 100 kph in 6.2 seconds and covers 1 000 metres from a standing start in 25.6 seconds.

Available in six colour variants, the 308GTi isn’t the craziest-looking hot hatch out there, but it’s hardly what you’d call ugly.

Inside, things appear to be red, very red. Red stitching features on the dashboard, upholstery, door panels, gear lever and high end floor mats. The door sill also carries the PEUGEOT SPORT and GTi signature and is in aluminium, as are the pedals, foot rest and gear knob.

On the gadget-front, there’s the increasingly standard center-console touch screen, which connects to the Peugeot i-Cockpit.

There’s also a bit of gimmickry. Pressing the Sport button on the centre console, for instance, switches the display colour from white to red, shows additional information on the central readout (power, torque, boost, lateral and longitudinal acceleration), enhances engine growl and changes the accelerator pedal mapping.
