The first weekend of 2019 saw a superhero movie take the top spot of the Southern African box office.

DC Comics’ Aquaman spent another weekend (4 – 6 January 2019) atop the local charts according to Ster Kinekor, keeping in tune with its global success.

The flick has amassed R37.3-million in the region thus far, but just below US$950-million globally, making it 46th biggest grossing movie of all time.

Below DC Comics’ biggest ever movie, Transformers spin-off Bumblebee places second, with Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody in third position.

Two remakes of timeless classics follow.

Mary Poppins Returns (which is oddly enough also available in 4DX) is fourth, while Robin Hood (another 4DX flick) is fifth.

Still riding high after Christmas, The Grinch places sixth, while Disney’s Ralph Breaks The Internet is seventh.

Instant Family, Oscar-winner Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and Second Act round out the top ten.
