Twitter has released a new feature aimed at showing off the top News of the day, something that could be part of its efforts to up revenue in the face of falling stock prices.
Though the feature is only in testing phase, it gives an indication of where Twitter intends to go, in a space where users can use it not only for Tweets but for general news too.
According to BuzzFeed, Twitter is yet to confirm all the details but it has admitted that it is testing such a feature.
The News tab will offer trending news at the bottom of Twitter apps, on both the iOS and Android apps. When users tap on the headlines, they will be taken to a story screen with an image, headline, and a paragraph from the story. It will also include the top tweets that are discussing that particular story.
News Tab provides a list of headlines from publishers approved by Twitter.
“We’re experimenting with a news experience on iOS and Android as we continue to explore new ways to surface the best content to users,” a Twitter spokesperson said in a statement.
For users who only use Twitter as a curator of news, this feature appears to be ideal. Instead of strolling through tweets, mostly irrelevant to the news they want, users can now go the news tab first and then read tweets that are discussing the news they are reading.
The feature is not available in every Twitter market for now and it is not clear when it will be. The US and Japan are the two markets in which it is being tested in.
