SA’s box office: Justice League reigns supreme
If you’re an avid follower of South Africa’s box office, then you may have noticed a lapse in our weekly updates. This is because Ster-Kinekor Entertainment — which provides Memeburn with the lists — has been experiencing technical difficulties that prevented the release of the results.
Unfortunately this means that, for this week, we will be unable to compare films’ performances with their previous weeks — but as soon as we have that information it will be included in our updates.

Justice League (review) may not be killing it as well as DC hoped — its opening weekend was the franchise’s lowest ever — but South Africans have refused to turn their noses at an entertaining film filled with some of the best heroes comics have to offer. In its second week in theatres, Justice League found itself at top spot, refusing to budge for newcomers Coco and Daddy’s Home 2.
In a surprising turn of events, the comedy Daddy’s Home 2 (featuring Mel Gibson on his gross redemption tour) beat out Disney Pixar’s Coco for second place, despite children’s films being proven hits in South Africa. The animation instead had to settle for third in its opening weekend.
Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok (review) has proven both a critical and box office hit, and the film is currently enjoying fourth place in its fifth week on the charts. Taika Waititi’s blockbuster is currently the highest life-to-date grosser with over R25.1-million in revenue.
In fifth spot is the star-studded Murder on the Orient Express (review), which critics (including yours truly) panned. Despite an underwhelming SA debut, though, the film has pulled in US$202-million from a reported US$55-million production budget.
Behind Murder is Geostorm, The Star, and The Mountain Between Us in sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively. In ninth is the animated Jungle Bunch, which — like Thor — has been on the charts for five weeks.
Finally, South Africa’s own Liewe Kersfeesvader (Dear Father Christmas) is on its last legs in tenth spot after just two weeks on the chart. Guess the film was on Santa’s mediocre list.
