Last week in trailers: Incredibles 2, Deadpool 2, Tali’s Wedding Diary & more

This week we have major blockbusters, highly-anticipated animations, YouTubers breaking out, and Godzilla-like gorillas, wolves and crocs because Hollywood canWhat more could you ask for?

Here are the notable trailers released in the last week.

Incredibles 2

I may be the only person on the planet content with keeping the wonderful The Incredibles as a standalone film — but, hey, if anyone can shake off Sequel Syndrome it’s Disney Pixar.

So here’s the trailer that the web has been screaming for for the last 13 years. Enjoy.

The Incredibles 2 hits South African shores 15 June 2018.

Deadpool 2

Watch Ryan Reynolds embrace his inner Bob Ross in this teaser trailer that promises the same over-the-top tongue-in-cheek humour that was so successful in the first Deadpool.

The ridiculous YouTube description reads:

After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.

Deadpool 2 premieres 1 June 2018.

A Wrinkle in Time

The official trailer for Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time offers more in the way of plot for those of us who were never forced to read the eponymous classic in high school.

Starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Zach Galifianakis, and Chris Pine, A Wrinkle in Time is the first film with a budget over US$100-million directed by a woman (Ava Duvernay).

It opens in SA 9 March 2018.

The Greatest Showman on Earth

The Greatest Showman is an original musical “inspired by the ambition and imagination of PT Barnum”, founder of the self-professed “Greatest Show on Earth”, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

The film’s ensemble cast includes Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson. It premieres 29 December.

Dwayne Johnson is a gorilla whisperer in Rampage, the latest action film about abnormally large, genetically edited animals.

I guess Hollywood was so preoccupied with whether or not it could, it didn’t stop to think if it should.

Catch Rampage in theatres 11 May 2018.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

Drac has been working at his hotel for centuries, and now he’s in need of a break.

Enter Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, in which the monster family enjoys summer on a cruise ship. The film features the voices of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, David Spade, and Steve Buscemi.

It opens in SA 13 July 2018.

Tali’s Wedding Diary

From Showmax Originals and the creators of SuzelleDIY on YouTube comes this local series about Tali, a Joburg princess in Cape Town pedantically planning her ridiculous wedding.

You can check out more of “Tali’s” promotional efforts on her Instagram, @tali_babes.

The show premieres on Showmax 14 December.

The Mercy

Directed by James Marsh (The Theory of Everything), The Mercy tells the true story of Donald Crowhurst, an amateur sailor who competed in an intense sailing competition in the hopes of becoming the first man to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe without stopping.

The film stars Colin Firth, Rachel Weisz, and David Thewlis. It doesn’t have an SA release yet, but will be in the UK 9 February 2018.

A Quiet Place

In this haunting trailer, a small family living on a farm are forced to live in silence in the hopes of avoiding an off-screen evil.

A Quiet Place marks the first collaboration for spouses John Krasinski, who also directs, and Emily Blunt. And it looks good.

The film premieres in SA 11 May 2018.

F The Prom

Here’s another YouTube success story: Fine Brothers Entertainment, rising to fame with its popular React web series, has a new film coming out starring some of The CW’s finest teen show actors.

Riverdale‘s Madelaine Petsch, The Originals‘ Danielle Campbell, and The Messengers’ Joel Courtney are teaming up in F The Prom, a high school drama about a popular girl declaring war on the social rite.

If the trailer is anything to go by, no one who worked on the script has spoken to a teenager in years, but, hey, that’s showbiz. F The Prom is out digitally 5 December.

HBO’s latest series starring Kit Harrington tells the tale of British activist Guy Fawkes and his plan to blow up the House of Lords and kill King James I.

Remember, remember, 18th of December, Gunpowder‘s opening slot. I know of no reason Gunpowder‘s season should ever be forgot.

(Disclaimer: The rhyme is misleading. I haven’t seen it yet and so cannot say if it should be forgotten. I just wanted to lighten the mood.)

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

Following the success of The People v OJ SimpsonThe Assassination of Gianni Versace is the second instalment in anthology series American Crime Story.

The 10-episode season explores the iconic fashion designer’s murder, and, judging by the trailer, focuses on the life of the serial killer who did it.

The show stars Darren Criss, Penélope Cruz, Max Greenfield, Ricky Martin, and Édgar Ramírez. It premieres in the US 17 January 2018.
