The Cricket World Cup: the biggest tweets, teams and moments on Twitter
The Cricket World Cup is finally over, and as the Proteas pick up the pieces of their memorable performance, Twitter is counting up the interactions.
According to metrics provided by the social network, the tournament’s official hashtag saw more than 31-million tweets during the tournament’s six week spell. That’s a 100% growth rate over 2015.

England was ultimately declared champions after hitting two fours as opposed to New Zealand’s single six in their super over. Sure, a controversial moment, but the final wasn’t the most tweeted-about match. Instead, it was a group-stage match between India and Pakistan. The final placed second, while India vs New Zealand and Australia vs England — the two semi-finals — placed third and fifth respectively.
Oh, and it turns out that the Proteas did actually feature higher than seventh in one of the World Cup’s metric. #ProteaFire featured as the fifth “most mentioned team emojis”. India, Pakistan, England, and New Zealand featured more prominently.
Unsurprisingly then, Virat Kohli — India’s captain — was the most mentioned captain. He also claimed the most popular tweet during the tournament.

Okay, South Africa. So we made one metric. Whether the Protea’s luck will change in 2023 remains to be seen. For now, even though England lifted the actual trophy, it seems that India won the social media Cricket World Cup.
