Here’s how South Africans spent their 67 minutes on Nelson Mandela Day 2019
Mandela Day is now very much a part of South African culture. It’s a day where we all strive to give back to the community for at least 67 minutes to honour the birth of late former president Nelson Mandela.
With variations of the hashtags #MandelaDay2019 and #67Minutes dominating Twitter throughout Thursday, here’s how South Africans celebrated giving back.

Some, of course, got down to community engagement, volunteering and giving in general.
Thanks to our local Riverside Cllrs & our volunteers who have helped make these beautiful pots & hanging baskets free to anyone who volunteers 67 minutes of their time. These and other free goodies this Thursday from 1pm outside the Florrie Mill Street #MandelaDay #67minutes pic.twitter.com/zj26MYB8xp

And many took a moment to remember, and quote, Madiba himself.
The world misses men like #NelsonMandela more than ever today. His life was a testament to truth, love and freedom.
To me, he was Uncle Nelson (who told me I ought to be in politics long before anyone else did!). He will always be my insipration and my guide. pic.twitter.com/JaPeHkT69g

#ThursdayMotivation As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.

Nelson Mandela, who died in 2013, would have been 101 years old today.
