A ‘SpongeBob’ spinoff all about Squidward could be coming to Netflix
A SpongeBob SquarePants spinoff series could be coming to Netflix soon thanks to a new deal between the streaming service and Nickelodeon.
The two companies on Wednesday announced that the deal will bring Nickelodeon’s “library of characters” and a range of new stories to Netflix.
“Nickelodeon has generated scores of characters that kids love, and we look forward to telling wholly original stories that re-imagine and expand on the worlds they inhabit,” said Melissa Cobb, the vice president of original animation at Netflix.
According to a report by The New York Times, the deal will also include a music-related project featuring Squidward, the famously grumpy octopus from the SpongeBob series.
Though further details about the deal have not been revealed, the news comes after Disney+ launched earlier this week.
The new streaming service from Disney is now home to many beloved classic movies, posing a threat to Netflix.
A spinoff based on the icon SpongeBob series, however, could help the company compete with the new vault of fan-favourites.
