How to find jobs on Twitter in South Africa

Few things are more labourious and tense in life than looking for a job. For those without, it’s even more stressful. But fret not, because technology can help.

While it might not guarantee you’ll be hired, tech can help you craft a pretty good CV on your phone, or search through a number of listings in a convenient place.

That convenient place, you ask? Twitter of course.

Here are just a few Twitter accounts to help with that job search.

• @BizJobsCPT: Generally lists marketing gigs and jobs within the digital industry across South Africa.
• @jobsvinesa: With 758 000 followers, it’s one of South Africa’s more popular job listing accounts with frequent updates.
• @LookingForZA: With 35 000 followers, Looking For doesn’t link to any sites. Instead, its tweets include job opportunities and services that require fulfillment. “We only post vacancies that have an email address- no links. Not everyone has unlimited data to click on links,” it adds.
• @Jobsburn: Burn Media’s own job listing site lists specialised gigs available in the digital industry.
• @ISASAjobs: If you’re an educator, this account is for you. It lists vacancies from a bevy of educational institutions across Southern Africa.
• @JobSouth_Africa: Jobs4Jobs’ South African portal lists a number of jobs — from admin to call centre agents — across South Africa.
• @TheJobCentreSA: Another account listing jobs for South Africans across a number of industries, from telesales to retail management. Note: it does update listings in clumps.
• @MyJobSearchSA: This account tends to list fewer vacancies, but it does seemingly focus on more specialised industries, including pharma and packaging sectors
• @Jobslistafrica: This account lists a number of positions, from research to education.
• @CareersPortal1: Each of this account’s listings include a picture of the requirements, while tweets themselves include closing dates, position and location. Western Cape governmental vacancies seem to be quite popular too.
• @Trending_jobs: An account dedicated to spotting jobs not normally listed on recruitment sites. It lists a number of jobs from pictures of newspaper requests, and noticeboards and flyers.
• @HireMeZA: If you’re struggling to find a job, you can list yourself and your Twitter handle on this account. “Tweet us your qualifications/skills/dream job. We’ll tweet it & hopefully someone can hire you!” the account writes.

Notably, we should mention that before jumping head first into any job application that you perform relevant background checks. Additionally, treat your personal information as precious, both online and in the real world.
