Google Play Store’s premium subscription will rid your games of ads
Soon we could be paying a monthly fee to access ad-free Android apps and games. A report by Android Police on Wednesday revealed that Google is testing a new subscription service called Play Pass, which gives users “premium” access to the Play Store.
The publication received screenshots of the new service, where a $4.99 sign-up page with 10-day free trial period can be seen.
“Access hundreds of premium apps and games with no adds and in-app purchases,” the page reads.
Subscribers, who can cancel anytime or opt for a family package, can also try out new apps and games through the service.
Though a Google spokesperson reportedly confirmed the test, the company did not reveal when Play Pass might roll out.
At present, Google allows users to purchase apps and games with prices set by developers.
These payments usually activate features within apps — from the removal of ads, to more premium additions in functionality. Some developers also allow subscriptions to their work, like weather apps that require to pay for a monthly service to access data.
Google’s test could also be a response to Tinder’s bypassing its Play Store payments system, which demands a 30% cut.
It’s not clear just how Google will slice its Play Pass subscription pie with developers.
