Twitter showed more ads to people with fewer followers
A report by The Verge on Thursday revealed that Twitter once showed its users ads according to their follower counts.
“Historically, users with high follower counts have seen fewer ads,” the company reportedly said.
This means that the smaller your following, the more ads you were harassed by on the platform. The practice suggests that “popular” people on the platform earn the right to have an almost ad-free experience.
“Recently, we’ve shifted our approach to showing ads to everyone who uses Twitter and as a result, some will notice an increase in the number of ads they’re seeing,” Twitter further said.
The news comes after the company blamed its third-quarter earnings on problems with advertising.
Despite the revenue report, Twitter’s daily active users still grew by 17% in Q3.
Earlier this week, the company also launched “lights out” mode on Android. The mode is Twitter’s version of dark mode, a feature that’s now the most sought after by users on social networks.
