What will South Africans eat more of in 2020? Uber Eats places its bets

Uber Eats 2020 predictions

Following the release of South Africa’s “Cravings Report” back in September, Uber Eats on Wednesday announced its FoodCast predictions for 2020.

Based on the Uber Eats’ biggest trends in 2019 (such as tacos, pizza and burgers) the company believes that it has a firm understanding of what South Africans are going to crave next year. In fact, the company noted a steady increase in healthier eating choices across the country, even though fast food remains a favourite.

Superfoods such as flaxseed and previously unpopular fruit like jackfruit, however, are expected to rise in popularity come the new year.

“Products containing CBD oil are set to appear on more restaurant menus across South Africa and kombucha will become a staple side order with our meals,” added Uber in the press release.

Additionally, garlic, cacao and popcorn are also set to take centre stage along with Israeli, Scandinavian and Ethiopian food.

Meanwhile, the company believes that kimchi, tofu, matcha and Sriracha will shrink in fame.

As for 2019, these were the most popular food items or requests in South Africa according to Uber Eats:

  1. Pizza
  2. Cashew
  3. Raw
  4. Shawarma
  5. Garlic
