Samsung outs Exynos 5 eight-core Octa chip [CES]

Remember how exciting it was when quad-core mobile CPUs emerged? Well that’s all in the past now that Uncle Sam(sung) has gone and outed the Exynos 5 Octa chip, an eight-core mobile CPU.

There’s very little known of the Exynos as yet, so we’re not going to stretch this out for too long. The chip was unearthed November 2012, and will run two quad-core CPU’s up to 1.8Ghz.

On stage, Samsung President Dr Woo said that the new chips offer twice the 3D gaming performance of anything currently on offer. Hardly surprising, since it is two four-core CPUs running in tandem. Outside of the obvious, this’ll push mobile phones into the realm of true computing speed and as convergence becomes the lynch-pin for every new device ever, the extra horsepower will simply blur the lines between mobile and desktop computing even further. Expect the new chips to hit high-end Samsung devices, soon.
