South African developer Free Lives has announced the SA Game Jam 2021, inviting professional and amateur game developers to enter the event to compete for their share of R50 000.

The game jam will take place virtually on between 22 and 24 October. The annual event aims to encourage more locals to make games, with developers of any experience level invited to join.

Participants can join as an individual or a team and entry is open for South Africa residents.

The event will include eight categories with different prizes.

These include:

  • Overall Winner: R20 000
  • Student: R10 000
  • Hobbyist: R10 000
  • Diversity: R10 000
  • Best Art: R5 000
  • Best Audio: R5 000
  • Technical Excellence: R5 000
  • Best Narrative: R5 000

However, to be eligible to win a prize, your team will need to play and give feedback on five other entries in the game jam.

Entrants also retain all copyright to their submitted work — with the game jam noting that the illegal use of copyrighted material will not be tolerated.

Participants will also be able to socialise and interact on the Make Games SA Discord Server.

You can find out more about the competition and its requirements on the SA Game Jam 2021 website.
