Chinese phone maker Vivo landed in South Africa at the bottom end of 2019 with two fairly average and underwhelming mid-range devices.

It’s now set to launch two new devices in South Africa in the coming months. Joining the Y91C and the Y11 Pro, the Y12 and the Y30 will be made available in July.

The Vivo Y12

The Y12 was announced nearly a year ago. It features a 6.35-inch display with 1544×720 resolution. There’s also an 8MP selfie camera up top in a waterdrop notch.

Internally, it’s powered by the Mediatek Helio P22 with a maximum of 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Users get a dedicated microSD card slot too along with dual SIM functionality. (Although previous Vivo phones in SA have featured single SIM support, as Vodacom exclusives.)

Around the back you’ll find three cameras; a 13MP primary with phase-detection autofocus, an 8MP ultrawide and a 2MP depth sensor.

Finally, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor is also present along with a 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom as a microUSB port.

But the big feature is the 5000mAh battery, something we praised on the Y11. Notably, that’s also the case on the Y30.

The Vivo Y30

The more modern phone, complete with a punch-hole selfie camera, also boasts a 5000mAh battery but adds a USB-C port and 10W charging to the package.

The Y30’s rear camera array is almost identical to the Y12 bar the addition of a 2MP macro sensor. The selfie camera’s sensor remains an 8MP unit.

Internally, the phone is powered by the Helio P35 with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

Up front, the Y30 features a smaller 6.47-inch display with 1560×720 resolution.

While the Y12 runs Android 9 Pie, the Y30 feature Android 10 with FunTouch OS 10.

As for pricing details, Vivo is expected to provide concrete numbers at the beginning of July. And as for the rest of 2020, the company confirmed that a 5G smartphone will be offered in South Africa before 2021.
