This is sad, desperately sad. A Brazilian company is helping all the lonely hearts out there on Facebook create perfect, but completely fake, girlfriends.
To be fair, it’s not doing so as an act of charity. The site, called Namorofake, actually seems quite ballsy in the pricing structure it’s chosen for something that — given enough time — you could do fairly easily for free.
A fake ex-girlfriend will set you back R$19 (US$5.40) for seven days while R$39 (US$19.13) will get you an actual fake girlfriend for the same amount of time. If you’re the kind of person who’s really into long-term commitment, then you might be interested in the 30 day package for R$99 (US$48.57).
The site reckons that the service it’s providing can help men gain confidence with women or help them with their self-esteem. It admits however that a large portion of its traffic comes from people out for revenge on former lovers:
Sometimes people need to rent a fake girlfriend to make jealous a jealous ex-girlfriend. In truth, we have a lot of clients for that reason. After a breakup, the ex-boyfriends want to show that they are already with another person to feel good. One immediate way to do this is to hire a fake girlfriend to maintain appearances.
And if you’re wondering why anyone would dole out so much money for a picture of some bikini-glad girl stolen from Flickr with a profile that includes interests bizarrely similar to yours, the answer is they aren’t.
Namorofake actually encourages real women to offer up their profiles for its use, giving them 50% of the profits.
At this stage there are no fake boyfriends available, although the site says that is in the works.
