Like it or not, you’re getting Facebook Timeline

Some people love Facebook’s new Timeline feature. Others have been less certain. In fact, scam artists and spammers capitalised on some users who were desperate to get rid of the new feature. Your feelings on Timeline, however, no longer matter. In the next few weeks, like it or not, your profile will have Timeline incorporated.

Facebook made the announcement in an update of the blog post in which it announced the new feature would be made available worldwide.

The post makes it clear that “Over the next few weeks, everyone will get timeline”. It adds that users will “have 7 days to preview what’s there now”.

“This gives you a chance to add or hide whatever you want before anyone else sees it,” it says.

Timeline was first announced at Facebook’s f8 developer conference in September 2011. Fans who were particularly eager to get a hands-on look at the new feature had to sign up for developer accounts.

The global rollout of the new feature was, however, delayed until mid December. Even then, the first countries to get it — like New Zealand — were small and had manageable online populations.

When it launched Timeline, Facebook described it as “telling the story of your life”. The social network reckons that it “gives you an easy way to rediscover the things you shared, and collect your most important moments. It also lets you share new experiences, like the music you listen to or the miles you run”.

Significantly, Timeline has also allowed Facebook to forge a number of media partnerships. Most recently, it launched some 60 new apps for Timeline from the likes of Foodspotting, Foodily, Ticketmaster, Pinterest, Rotten Tomatoes,Pose, Kobo, Gogobot, and TripAdvisor.

These apps, it claims, will only “help you tell your story.”

    Like any other good app developer, the users should have a choice whether to use the new feature or not.  It’s not good practice to force users into something, as a general rule.  Google + will be a nice change of pace from Facebook.
