It’s box office time again! This week, things haven’t changed all that much at the top of the standings. So if you’re one for upsets, look away now.

The juggernaut Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle remains Southern Africa’s biggest movie this past weekend (12 — 14 January), earning an additional R11-million at the box office since our last report.

Liam Neeson also discovers that he can still make coin regardless of his character’s mode of transport. The Commuter, which also stars Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel) and Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring) spends its first week on the chart in second place.

In case you’re wondering, Neeson is stuck on a train this time around.

This film really should’ve been shot in Cape Town.

Liam Neeson stars in the highest newcomer this week, The Commuter, but Jumanji remains king

Taking the last step of the podium is none other than Pitch Perfect 3 (review), because sequels continue to enthrall Southern African movie goers.

But what about the rest of the top ten?

Ferdinand, the movie that opened with the most number of prints of any in Southern Africa in 2017, is finally finding its feet, holding steady at number four this week.

Another animated flick, The Nut Job: Nutty By Nature, squeaks through with its nuts unscathed to retain fifth position on the chart.

But the biggest surprise came from Star Wars: The Last Jedi (review), which collapsed from third to seventh.

The second newcomer to the chart — Molly’s Game — finds itself in eighth place. It stars Jessica Chastain (Interstellar) and Idris Elba (Luther), and tells the true story of a skier who has a bit of a thing for poker. The FBI is also involved at some point.

Here are ten most-watched movies in SA this past weekend:
