A porn block may be implemented in South Africa in the future
A renewed call to block porn in South Africa has been made in a report by the South African Law Reform Commission.
The independent advisory body’s latest paper published in April discusses the impact of pornographic content on children. Its argument suggests that blocking porn in its entirety will shield kids from it and “child sexual abuse material”.
According to MyBroadband, it aims to accomplish this by demanding that all devices sold in South Africa be configured by default to block “inappropriate content”. It does however suggest there may be an “opt-in” setting for those of appropriate age as long as proof is provided.
This means that it believes both makers of devices and providers of services block porn by default.
The SALRC’s report is merely a recommendation though, however other countries have employed similar porn blocking measures. The UK is about to implement its own version, while citizens in other countries like India have found ways to circumvent porn bans.
