Nintendo has launched its Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, an expanded and more expensive version of its traditional online subscription plan.
But how is this new plan different from the old one? And how much will it cost in South Africa?
Here’s what you should know…
What the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership includes
The new subscription plan includes the features of the classic Nintendo Switch Online membership, along with additional features.
If you need a refresher, Switch Online gives you access to online play for certain games, cloud saving, the Nintendo Switch Online app, and NES and Super NES games.
Meanwhile, the new subscription includes access to classic Nintendo 64 games, access to the new Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise expansion pack, and Sega Genesis games, with online play.
At launch, the membership includes nine Nintendo 64 games and 14 Sega Genesis games. Nintendo says that more games will be added to the subscription in future.
Price in South Africa
Prices for the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership in South Africa range from R629 per year to R1129 per year.
The Individual plan costs R629 per year, while the Family Plan costs R1129.
The Family Plan allows you to add up to eight Nintendo accounts to the membership.
There are no monthly package options available.
Currently, a standard Switch Online subscription costs R262 per year or R52 per month. You can also opt for a three-month subscription for R105.
If you upgrade from a standard subscription to the expansion subscription, you will receive a discount based on the number of days left on your original membership.
Nintendo notes in its FAQ that you can only switch back to a standard subscription once your expansion subscription has expired.
Meanwhile, the Happy Home Paradise Expansion is R450 on the Nintendo eShop. However, this includes permanent access to the expansion that is not tied to a subscription period.
