It’s 2023, a year expected to have many new interesting upgrades for PlayStation.
While unconfirmed rumors of a PlayStation 5 Pro remain unconfirmed, an interesting device from the PlayStation camp is the PS5 controller with a variety of swappable components.
PlayStation has introduced a customizable new PS5 controller which means more unique functionality for users.
Known as Project Leonardo, the controller designed with players with disabilities in mind, is intended to introduce PlayStation to an even bigger audience.
Project Leonardo controllers can be paired with Dual Sense and feature software options such as user profiles, and button mapping.
The controllers can be expanded due to their 3.5mm aux ports and will most likely be designed to be used with other accessories.
The controller is designed to not be standard and allows the user to set it up the way they feel comfortable.
You’ll be able to layer different button features, allowing users to be able to press two buttons at the same time seamlessly.
Access to gaming to many people is the goal with this project.
PlayStation said it intended to raise the bar to enable gamers to experience the joy of play with robust accessibility options.
With a codename Leonardo set as the codename for accessibility, the new customizable controller aims to help many players with disabilities kick butt more comfortably for longer periods.
“Project Leonardo is part of the PS5 product family and is based on the same design concept. We were inspired by the idea of all players enjoying the world of PlayStation together.
“Our team tested over a dozen designs with accessibility experts, looking for approaches that would help address key challenges to effective controller use.
“We finally settled on a ‘split controller’ design that allows near free-form left/right thumbstick repositionability, can be used without needing to be held, and features very flexible button and stick cap swapping.
“Because players can customize Project Leonardo according to their needs, there is no one ‘right’ form factor. We want to empower them to create their own configurations. The controller can also flexibly accept combinations of accessibility accessories to create a unique aesthetic. I am excited that the design will be completed through collaboration with players rather than presenting them with a single form factor,” said Morimoto, designer at Sony entertainment.
