  • Cape Town Taxi Strike: get realtime traffic data with this nifty map

Today's taxi strike is currently affecting Cape Town's already stressed transportation network, and is set to continue throughout the week. With the likes of the N1, N2 and N7 shuttered at select intersections, traffic flow is largely affected leading into the city and beyond. While Google Maps is a great way to keep abreast of traffic flow, and Google-owned Waze is an app that deserves another honourable mention, there's another local and free service that delves deeper into Cape Town's arterial routes. Cape Town's taxi strike is currently affecting traffic across the city Dubbed i-Traffic, the resource is a joint venture between SANRAL,...

  • This Cape Town taxi map shows how beautiful big data can be

Cape Town is a large, complex city, with a mountain in the middle of it, and an ocean encompassing it. As a result, travelling from point A to point B isn't always as simple as it should be. With a number of different transport options, citizens are often tasked with finding the fastest way home on their own, and this WhereIsMyTransport (WIMT) saw as a massive problem. Noting the lack information regarding the city's informal mini bus taxi routes, the company has mapped the previously undocumented taxi route landscape of the city. Making the informal formal through big data, maps Dubbed the Cape...

  • Google uses 700 trillion pixels to update Maps, Earth

We often take Google Maps and Google Earth for granted, but the Mountain View company has updated its cloud-free mosaic with some wonderfully sharp images this week. Yep, the company has taken advantage of new processing techniques and the Landsat 8 satellite to deliver an updated global mosaic - and the results are rather impressive. Google said it sifted through over a petabyte of data to deliver this new mosaic, coming three years after its original Earth mosaic. It added that the petabyte of information was made up of 700 trillion individual pixels. "To put that in perspective, 700 trillion pixels is 7000 times more pixels than the...

  • Bing Maps makeover: predictive routing, multiple places, along the route features introduced

In its biggest update yet, Bing Maps has received a massive redesign. The redesigned Bing Maps comes with a number of features focused on travel planning. The features allow users to search, view and share multiple places at one time. The company claims that the new features have been created based from user feedback. From the feedback, it became clear that users want one experience that brings together the best content in one view. A view that not only shows their last searches but one that fully reflects their plans. They also wanted a map experience that is fast and...

  • Nokia’s new mapping service is HERE and set to hit iOS and Android

Maps are important, just ask Apple. There is superior mapping software though, and it belongs to Nokia. Nokia's new mapping product HERE is not yet "here", but it is a GPS app for iOS and Android, made the Nokia way. Nokia says, HERE is the "first location cloud" software and is going to be a free download when it lands on various Android and Apple products later in the year, or Q1 2013. Nokia HERE is an HTML 5 app with voice-guided walking, an offline mode and a guide for public transport. All very handy for those wanting to explore their...

  • Google Earth mobile gets radical 3D makeover

Google is set to give Google Earth for mobile a radical 3D makeover. The internet today announced that it will begin adding 3D models to entire metropolitan areas to Google Earth on mobile devices. According to Google's VP of Engineering for Google Maps Brian McClendon, this is possible "thanks to a combination of our new imagery rendering techniques and computer vision that let us automatically create 3D cityscapes, complete with...
